Eric Koston vs. Chad Muska
I get there just as Muska starts riding. He’s shredding in no time. The kids are out in force. They are stoked! I am stoked. A few other guys from the Circa and Es teams are out there warming up the crowd.
The TITLE sounds interesting enough right? It did for me and so I went to go check out what the two largest street skating legends could be up to. A showdown at high noon in Los Angeles @ the new 9star shop is what I anticipated. Here’s what went down:
I get there just as Muska starts riding. He’s shredding in no time. The kids are out in force. They are stoked! I am stoked. A few other guys from the Circa and Es teams are out there warming up the crowd. Where is Koston? I’ll get to that soon.
KROQ is out there pumping tunes next to the 9 Stair stage setup. Mark Waters sits on the mic for a while and fills us in on the purpose for us being there. Here’s what I gathered, Koston and Muska wanted to have a good jam session for
street skating fans in LA. This wasn’t meant as a head to head showdown, instead just a head and head and head and head bro-down. That was cool and nobody really seemed to care about the head to head anyhow. Where’s Koston?
Muska is breaking a nice sweat as he starts working the hubba ledge in the 76 degree sunshine. Second or 3rd drop down the hubba, SNAP! Time for a new board! Repeat again, Second or 3rd drop down the hubba, SNAP! Time for another new board! Repeat again, Second or 3rd drop down the hubba, SNAP! Time for another new (3) board!
Repeat again, Second or 3rd drop down the hubba, SNAP! Time for another new (4) board!, Repeat again, Second or 3rd drop down the hubba, SNAP! Time for another board (one of the kids traded him his stick for the busted one since they were out of the Shorty’s to keep replacing his)! Repeat again, Second or 3rd drop down the hubba, SNAP! Time for another new (5) board! Repeat again, Second or 3rd drop down the hubba, SNAP! Time for another new (6) board!
Repeat again, Second or 3rd drop down the hubba, SNAP! Time for another new(7) board! 7 boards in about an hour! Made for some nice stories and good laughs. At this point he was done. Where’s Koston?
Koston finally comes out to play at the end of the Muska Destruction session. Koston plays and plays, and plays just dicking around on a bank, fun box, and quarter pipe. Everyone wanted to see him skate bad, including me! Muska gets on the mic and verbally pumps up the crowd for the best trick event. The other skaters were pretty much bailing their asses off and picking them up off the ground repeatedly. Occasionally one would land a gnarly trick and the crowd would get stoked. Believe me it was pretty dead waiting for something to cheer for once Muska was finished because Koston was still dicking around.
About 3 hours in to this and I’m going W.T.F.? These skaters are busting their ass for the crowd and Koston had hit the Hubba Ledge and rail about 5 times. I think he was waiting until we all left. Which I did.
I silently proclaimed Chad Muska the winner of the head to head competition, since Eric Koston didn’t want to play.
