Slam City Jam 2000 coverage

(I originally published this on EXPN.com – Jeff Greenwood)

What a weekend! There was serious slammin’ and there was serious jammin’. The skate community gets buzzing the weekend before this event, as tribes of skaters from all over the globe pack there bags and head to the same place, Vancouver, British Columbia. Skaters can become underground legends here. I know a few, and have witnessed incidents that will be remembered for years to follow. This year was nothing short of that for most people who paid the Jam a visit.

There was major slammin’! Dave Metty, the W.C.S. judge, left the bloodiest mark of the weekend. He’ll sure remember the stitching it took to close the hole in his head. Arto Saari was slapped to the ground hard. He’ll remember fondly the enormous headache and broken arm he took home. Then Cayne Gayle wasn’t to be left out and he might remember the ambulance ride out of the place.

Not enough words to describe the jammin’! Here’s some of the highlights: The girls competition this year was excellent. An electric vibe started when Faye Jaime made a big time smith grind down one of the bigger handrails. Jamie Reyes was making switch boardslides and other awesome rail tricks. Bob Burnquist’s runs, again, were astonishing. Ed Templeton’s Best trick, a 50-50, across the whole bulkhead in the center stage, to frontside boardslide down a handrail, was far from shabby.A new T-shirt (see photo) design was instigated by the Red Dragons. It read, on the front, “Where’s Moses?”. On back it read, “Banned From Slam”. Moses Itkonen, the subject of the shirt, was not allowed into the facility by the venue operators (not the promoters or sponsors) because of some trouble he was involved in at last year’s event.

Let me finish off this write up by saying this is one wild and crazy event. There are probably 15,000 different tales from the weekend at Slam City Jam. They all have merit and they all probably relate the same message: Slam City jam should not be missed!
