Keeping the Community: Solvang Skate Shop
After trekking along the crowded coastline and cutting across the vast farmland, I eventually arrived at the Danish-styled village of Solvang California. In time, I wanted a break from the wineries, tourist traps, and chocolate shops, so I searched for familiarity in the shadow of a windmill. It was there on the second floor of a shopping center I found the Solvang Skate Shop.
Immediately inside I found a zine library tucked beneath a running marathon of skate vids. The back of the store held a mini-ramp perfect for testing out new purchases. All this before I gazed at any display cases or racks of shirts or skateboards. I was greeted by the team, specifically Rob Hargreaves, who’s outgoing personality brought a sense of ease to all who entered. Chatting with him we discussed skate culture and LA spots we both frequented. But Rob also expressed to me what can be considered the shop’s philosophy.
Not just a simple sentiment, but a powerful philosophy that all shops can and should have. For without the sense of community a skate shop provides, where they focus on providing what skaters old and new need, the culture cannot grow and thrive.
Upon exiting, Rob gifted me some stickers and wheels before asking for me to tag the white walls that surrounded the mini-ramp. After saying our goodbyes I looked down at the wheels that Rob gifted me seeing that they read, Support Your Local Skate Shop.
