The 1960's skate craze reached the little Texas town of Andrews
"Y'all come visit!" said Andrews Mayor Flora Braly when the Texas town had revamped the playground of its Lakeside Park in 2017. Now branded as "Kids' Kingdom," and including the Lakeside Park Skatepark, today's park bears little resemblance to what stood there 50 years ago.
In 1967, the kids playground area of Lakeside park was introduced as "Tiny Tot Acres" and it included an area that they called a "Skate-board ramp." The mayor at that time, Jimmy Wilkins, dared to step on a skateboard and test out the track after a council meeting in 1967.
Like the other known skateboard parks of the era, there wasn't much to distinguish this track from any other bit of sidewalk aside from its title, and it was specifically geared toward young children.
There are as of yet no clear photos of the track/ramp to indicate its size or design.
