An early park doomed to a short life for its lack of vert
Trucker Bruce Clark leased 2.5 acres of land from the Sarasota-Bradenton Airport to build the efficiently-designed Surferdrome (also called "Surferdrome USA"). The park was simply a 20-foot high mound with two runs each containing a single banked turn, one breaking left and the other breaking right.
While initially popular, business tapered off for the park within the first year.
"I was just too safety-minded when I built it...They ride vertical walls in swimming pools. That's what they want --the radical stuff," Clark told the Bradenton Herald in 1977.
