A cousin to Flow Motion skatepark in Richmond
Spartanburg Skatepark was opened in the spring of 1978, containing a freestyle area, snake run with halfpipe section and a bowl, as well as a non-coping vert pool. The park's owners were brothers Rubie and Joe Yonce.
"My roommate at (University of) South Carolina opened a skateboarding park in Richmond VA a few years ago and my brother and I just followed suit in Spartanburg," Joe said.
The park was open until 1979, but the concept for the site evolved away from skateboarding. An 18-hole miniature golf course was opened alongside the park, and then batting cages were added in 1980.
By 1981 the site was fully converted into a batting cage park (listed as "formerly" the skatepark) with 18 hole mini-golf being the secondary feature. The skatepark was no longer in operation despite remaining intact and unburied on the site.
The property still had the closed-down park until the mid 1980's. In 1982, a barbecue restaurant called Hickory Hut (Later "Smokey Joe's") became the primary attraction for the site, and its peak of popularity came in 1992 when president George HW Bush dined there.
