MMACH 5
"Wizard Skatepark was quite the mecca for DFW skateboarding in the late '70s and very early '80s. By the time I started skating here, it had long been closed down, but the concrete snake-runs remained intact for a few years. We did have to scale a barbed wire fence to get in, but once inside, we could skate all day without being disturbed. One of the bowls positioned at the end of the snake runs had collected about two feet of water, algae, muck and an assortment of aquatic insects. We would pop up onto the grass just before we reached the end. Well, I figured if I got enough speed I could carve all the way around and end up back at the opening to the snake run. I made it about half way before the loss of momentum sent me into bacteria infested sludge. I almost hurled at the smell and I didn't even try to wash my clothes. They went right into the trash.
Wizard was finally bulldozed in 1984. Its location was just off Belt Line Rd, near what used to be Lion Country Pkwy, (now Wildlife Pkwy).
