Municipal snakerun crammed between two baseball diamonds and a block of tennis courts.
Sitting in a densely crowded public park, Max Kehne skatepark was brought into being as a test for future skateparks in the area.
In 1976, Public Works superintendent Robert Strine and the Frederick City Recreation Commission laid out plans to put two public skate bowls in Frederick. The proposed locations were Max Kehne Park and in the Sagner residential development*. Only one park would have been eligible for state funds, and the other would have to have been city revenue.
Like many municipal parks of the late 70’s, the Max Kehne run was small and simple: essentially a straight asphalt ditch running into a shallow bowl. After skateboarding fell out of popularity in the early 80’s, the park was destroyed. Local Skater Scott Grimes told the Frederick News that the bowl was too wavy and had cracks. There is a lone tree planted in the center of where the bowl used to be.
*Sagner Skatepark was added in 2012 as part of the Frederick Police Activities League.
